Chronic low-grade inflammation is a silent but powerful driver of many modern diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia and other degenerative conditions. While acute inflammation is essential for host defence and wound healing, silent diet-induced inflammation can damage tissues over many years without obvious symptoms.
In this book, Barry Sears – a pioneer of “wellness medicine” – proposes a new paradigm: the evolution of our diets has created a “perfect nutritional storm” that promotes silent inflammation. His ideas, once strongly opposed by leading nutrition experts, are now increasingly supported by scientific evidence and echoed even by institutions such as Harvard Medical School.
Sears explains how similar dietary strategies can help prevent a wide range of chronic diseases – from diabetes and cardiovascular disease to neurodegeneration, autoimmunity and cancer – and may also reduce the risk of severe complications from viral infections such as COVID-19.
The book completes the “circle” of silent inflammation by describing not only anti-inflammatory nutrition, but also the pillars of inflammation resolution, from prevention to active resolution, through appropriate diet and protective nutrients rather than drugs.
Today it is estimated that genetics accounts for only about 15% of our resistance to disease and healthy lifespan, while about 85% is determined by epigenetic and lifestyle factors. Extending healthy lifespan (healthspan) has therefore become an ethical priority for modern societies, tightly linked to prevention policies and long-term sustainability.
