Paediatrics is progressing rapidly: having moved beyond its pioneering era, it has entered a new phase that is no less exciting and full of challenges. Modesto Mendicini’s work is an excellent testimony to this evolution. It retains two essential strengths of the “classic” paediatrics treatise: comprehensive coverage and a high standard of contributions, all prepared by distinguished experts in general and specialist paediatrics. This high cultural and professional level makes the reading equally rewarding for experienced paediatricians and for those approaching the discipline as students or residents. Compared to the “classic” treatise, it differs from the outset in its choice of topics: ethical issues, methodology and prevention, the evolution of the paediatric outpatient clinic, attention to “new” chronic diseases and to the care of children affected by them. Psychomotor development disorders and more specifically psychological and psychiatric conditions are also given the prominence they deserve in “new paediatrics”, both at primary and specialist level.
