The volume represents a consensus developed over ten years by seven osteopathic physicians, each trained at a different school of osteopathic medicine. It reflects the critical thinking and work of the Division of Principles and Practice of Osteopathy at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

For more than a decade, under the guidance of James Stookey, DO, and Karen Steele, DO, the institution focused on teaching osteopathy at an appropriate level for primary care practice, integrating manual techniques into the clinical setting.
