280-page volume with numerous illustrations and tables.
Child neuropsychiatry stems from the convergence of child psychiatry and child neurology. In these concise Guidelines for Developmental Psychiatry, the authors outline, within child neuropsychiatry, the specific field of child and adolescent psychiatry, now commonly referred to as developmental psychiatry.
The volume does not aim to be systematic or exhaustive, but offers a possible interpretation of child psychiatry as a polyvalent medical discipline, integrating biological, psychological and social dimensions. It is addressed not only to child neuropsychiatrists, but also to paediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists, rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, special education teachers and, in particular, university students studying child neuropsychiatry and developmental psychopathology.
The diagnostic guidelines for mental disorders in childhood and adolescence, which form the core of the book, are based on ICD-10, the classification system that child neuropsychiatry services are required to adopt. The five main diagnostic groups are discussed in relation to the neuropsychic structures primarily involved.
Further chapters address neuropsychological and psychopathogenetic lines, treatment guidelines (psychopharmacological, psychotherapeutic and rehabilitative) and preventive and organisational–political strategies, with attention to neuropsychological, communicative–relational and psychosocial rehabilitation and to the organisation of child neuropsychiatry services.
