Ultrasound is one of the most important and most frequently used diagnostic tools. It is employed by many specialists in a wide range of clinical settings, from the initial evaluation of patients to specific diagnosis, from a basic tool for differential diagnosis to guidance for interventional procedures. Unfortunately, it is more operator-dependent than any other diagnostic modality and, in the hands of an inexperienced operator, may lead to serious diagnostic errors.
This book represents an accessible practical guide for sonographers and for those interested in further developing their ultrasound skills. Its aim is to help operators optimize the diagnostic information that can be obtained and, above all, to recognize the limitations of the examination and avoid diagnostic mistakes.
Whenever possible, the book places ultrasound within a broader patient-centered approach, including presenting symptoms, complementary diagnostic methods, and different therapeutic options. It does not claim to be exhaustive, but rather represents a first step toward acquiring the practical skills and clinical knowledge required.
The goal of the book is to make students aware of the important role of ultrasound in patient management and to encourage sonographers to make appropriate use of the many potentials of diagnostic ultrasound within an adequately supervised clinical setting. The authors acknowledge the staff of the Leeds ultrasound service for their support and assistance.
