In the eleventh edition of the Manuale-Prontuario di Diagnostica e Terapia Medica, several new topics have been added, broadening the range of pathologies relevant to improving the diagnostic skills of the internist.
In particular, in addition to a comprehensive new chapter on COVID-19 and its complications, new sections have been included on pulmonary hypertension, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, mixed connective tissue disease, fibromyalgia, and more.
Some chapters have undergone substantial revision, such as the one on diabetes mellitus, where numerous new drugs have significantly expanded the range of available therapies, though their implementation in general practice may present challenges.
Several appendices have also been largely revised, including the dietology section, which incorporates updated nutritional concepts and dietary indications for various conditions. Special thanks are extended to dietitian Dr. Caterina Civale for her valuable collaboration.
The volume provides a rigorous yet practical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of major internal medicine diseases, based on the real needs of physicians. It combines clinical semiotics with reasonably accessible diagnostic tools while avoiding the underestimation of severe pathologies that may present with apparently trivial symptoms.
The therapeutic approach adheres strictly to scientific evidence and international guidelines, excluding unvalidated or non-scientific treatments. The rigorous selection of guideline-supported therapies remains a cornerstone of the work.
Hospital-based therapies are also described in sufficient detail to support consultation by physicians working in that setting.
Once again, this is a work designed for quick consultation and rigorous updating in the daily activity of general practitioners and internists.
