Since the publication of the first and second editions of this volume, ultrasound equipment has continued to evolve and improve, facilitating a better understanding of the ultrasound anatomy of musculoskeletal soft tissues.
Soft tissues represent more than 50% of body mass. Ultrasound has proven highly promising in this field and its role continues to evolve. Ultrasound allows visualization of musculoskeletal anatomy from a new and original perspective. Its ability to detect fluids with high sensitivity and specificity is extremely valuable in the diagnosis of osteoarticular pathology. The anisotropic diagnostic characteristics typical of mesodermal tissues, together with the specific acoustic impedance of fluid, constitute the physical basis for the success of musculoskeletal ultrasound.
The diagnostic success of ultrasound is closely linked to its ability to display the internal architecture of tissues; for this reason, this text is structured on anatomical foundations. The volume is divided into chapters that address pathology according to tissue type (histology) and regional anatomy (topographic anatomy).
New chapters have been added in this edition: one dedicated to post-surgical imaging and another to the evolving role of musculoskeletal ultrasound in telemedicine. Chapter 8 presents important recent advances in pathogenetic mechanisms. Chapter 15 addresses interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound. This chapter will be useful to those who have already begun practicing musculoskeletal ultrasound and wish to expand their scope. This new edition emphasizes the importance of color Doppler, power Doppler and real-time imaging.
This third edition contains expanded information on ultrasound anatomy, indications for musculoskeletal ultrasound, anatomo-pathological aspects and sonographic manifestations of various diseases. Patient positioning represents one of the most dynamic aspects of musculoskeletal ultrasound and increasingly advanced technical refinements continue to emerge. Beginners in this discipline must understand the importance of keeping up with the latest developments.
The rapid evolution of this method and the growing number of professionals active in this field demonstrate that musculoskeletal ultrasound represents a highly important diagnostic tool for those involved in musculoskeletal pathology.
