Trombofilia in Ostetricia e Ginecologia

Large-format volume (21 x 28 cm), 208 pages, fully printed in colour.

This book aims to share with readers a pathway and practical tools that may be useful to all professionals working across different medical fields who deal with haemostasis in women. Haemostasis and obstetrics have intersected for a long time and, by influencing one another, they shape the clinical course of pregnancy and, at times, the future of the unborn child.

The leading cause of maternal mortality in developing countries is haemorrhagic complications, whereas in industrialised countries the primary cause of maternal death is venous thromboembolism.

In women of any age, haemostatic alterations represent highly specific therapeutic challenges for the gynaecologist and may increase both the risk of menorrhagia and postpartum haemorrhage, as well as predispose to thrombosis during pregnancy or when hormonal therapies are used to modulate ovarian activity, including in the post-menopausal period.

Managing these issues requires knowledge ranging from reproductive physiology to expertise in haemostasis. Gynaecologists and obstetricians may not be familiar with a specific haemostatic disorder and the newer therapies used to address it. Conversely, clinicians who manage haemostasis disorders on a daily basis may be partially unprepared to handle the implications across different aspects of reproduction, namely menstruation, ovulation, gestation and childbirth. Haemostasis is a discipline that cuts across many medical and biological fields and therefore requires integration of different bodies of knowledge to meet the diverse needs that may arise in women.

This book will certainly provide readers with a means to bring together knowledge gained through study pathways and professional experience with recent advances from the scientific literature.
