Myasthenia is a disease characterized by muscle fatigue and typically presents with one or more of the following symptoms: drooping of an eyelid, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and weakness of the arms.
Until a few decades ago, it was considered a severe and sometimes fatal disease. Today, it can be effectively treated, allowing complete recovery in some patients and, in most cases, a normal life expectancy and good quality of life.
The Author has witnessed this important change in the history of the disease and describes it, while also addressing the ongoing challenges: diagnostic difficulties due to symptom disappearance after short periods of rest (the “hidden disease”); the delicate therapeutic balance required to avoid treatment-related complications; and the need to properly inform patients and involve them in shared decision-making.
This concise text is intended for physicians, healthcare professionals, patients, and family members. For this reason, in addition to the analytical index, it includes a glossary translating scientific terminology into plain language.
