This book represents the result of one hundred years of experience in the field of locoregional anesthesia of the upper limb. These one hundred years are intended not only as a historical period, from the first application of nerve blocks to the present day, but also as the sum of years of study, clinical practice, and professional experience contributed by the three authors to this remarkable branch of anesthesiology.
Particular attention has been given to chapters on anatomy and topographic anatomy of the region where the brachial plexus originates and develops, supported by a comprehensive and accurate iconographic apparatus. A thorough knowledge of anatomy is considered essential for anesthesiologists navigating tissues, fasciae, and muscles while avoiding vessels, meninges, and serous membranes, even when assisted by advanced tools such as nerve stimulators and ultrasound devices.
In the third millennium, the major innovation is represented by ultrasound guidance, which, thanks to technological advances, is becoming increasingly precise, particularly in terms of image resolution. In agreement with Admir Hadzic, neurostimulation and ultrasound guidance are considered complementary techniques, rather than mutually exclusive technologies.
This book is especially intended for younger colleagues and adopts a predominantly educational approach, with the aim of supporting them in learning the complex art of locoregional anesthesia, even when applied to a specific anatomical district.
