Magnetic resonance imaging is an increasingly indispensable imaging technique. New indications are emerging, particularly for the study of the heart and small vessels, the pelvis, the liver and the breast, and—thanks to its safety—in paediatrics and in pregnant women. Owing to ongoing progress, MRI now enables morphological and functional analysis in new fields such as brain functions, spectroscopy, the study of cerebrospinal fluid flow, diffusion and tissue perfusion. The aim of this manual is twofold: on the one hand, to provide readers with the essential foundations for understanding MRI (physics, techniques and semiotics) and, on the other, to take stock of the current capabilities of this examination. This fourth edition has been extensively updated with the inclusion of the latest and most advanced techniques; in particular, the chapters on the head, the musculoskeletal system and the chest have been rewritten and enriched with new images. After a historical and technical introduction, the different fields of application are presented according to a didactic scheme: description of techniques and exam preparation, presentation of normal findings and main pathologies. Interventional MRI and functional MRI are addressed in dedicated sections. The main study protocols—depending on the region examined and the pathology—are described at the end of the volume.
