Description

The volume is organised into 6 sections.

The first section (general part) contains useful information for the correct coding of the Hospital Discharge Form (SDO).

The second section is dedicated to cardiology-related DRGs, divided into surgical and medical DRGs, and provides explanations to help readers understand the logic of the Grouper.

In the third section, arranged into 4 columns, the following are listed:

  1. 1st column (conditions): an alphabetical list of diseases relevant to the cardiovascular field.
  2. 2nd column (COD): the ICD-9-CM code corresponding to the condition; for convenience it is shown without punctuation (for example, code 401.1 “Benign arterial hypertension” becomes 4011).
  3. 3rd column (DRG): the DRG (or DRGs) determined by that diagnosis (or code); when multiple DRGs are shown, assignment may depend on parameters such as the patient’s age, the presence/absence of significant secondary diagnoses, and the presence/absence of procedures that drive DRG assignment. Where two related DRGs are involved, the different assignment depends on the possible presence of significant secondary diagnoses. For surgical DRGs, different assignment can be derived from the procedures section, where each procedure specifies which DRGs are determined.
  4. 4th column (C): indicates whether the diagnosis is significant, i.e., whether it complicates (S) or does not complicate (N) the main diagnosis when recorded as a secondary diagnosis.

The fourth section provides the list of codes for miscellaneous procedures, endoscopies and biopsies used in clinical practice. In this case too, punctuation is omitted.

The fifth section provides the list of codes for surgical interventions and non-surgical cardiology procedures, most of which drive assignment towards specific DRGs (as indicated in the last column).

The sixth section reproduces, with partial modifications, the tariff schedule for inpatient care services, as per the Ministerial Decree of 14 December 1994, updated to 1999.
