Strabologia – 2nd edition

Pre-order volume – available from 26 November.

Large-format volume, 21 × 28 cm, 648 pages, 500 illustrations, online resources, hardback cover.

Twenty years after the first edition, this second edition, edited by Dr Mariarosa Zanasi, offers a thorough revision and update of the original work, dedicated to the memory of Prof. Bagolini and enriched by contributions from strabology experts Andrea Piantanida, Giovanni Battista Marcon and Elisa Bellesini.

The book preserves the core content of the previous edition while integrating the latest developments in diagnosis, pathophysiology and therapy, particularly thanks to advances in neuroimaging. The new edition features rich iconography, numerous illustrations, updated cases and teaching videos accessible via QR code that demonstrate diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical aspects.

The goal is to provide a comprehensive training pathway aimed not only at strabologists and orthoptists, but also at paediatricians and neuro-ophthalmologists, guiding them in the diagnosis and management of the various forms of strabismus and nystagmus.

Main innovations in the second edition

  • In-depth discussion of oculomotor mechanisms, proprioception, pulleys and muscle compartmentalisation.
  • Updated examination of the strabismic patient, with particular attention to refraction and strabometric assessment methods.
  • Revised chapters on binocular vision, strabismus sequelae, fusional movements and amblyopia, including new tools and approaches (Lang Stereopad, PEDIG studies, citicoline, therapeutic videogames, etc.).
  • Detailed description of new clinical forms and oculomotor syndromes (Skew Deviation, Parinaud, Duane IV, CFEOM, acquired Brown syndrome, Sagging Eye, Heavy Eye).
  • Expanded chapters on nystagmus, ocular torticollis, non-surgical treatments and extraocular muscle surgery, with updates on the most modern techniques (Yokoyama, Nishida, Marcon).
  • Introduction of the orthoptic approach to refractive surgery and updates on imaging of extraocular muscles (ultrasound, UBM, OCT, CT, MRI).

The book presents itself as a modern, comprehensive and multimedia resource that combines the Italian clinical tradition in strabology with the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic innovations.
